Through the hustle, bustle and turbulence of our times, you can still find a sense of calm when you enter the Pendulum Gallery. Juxtaposed by the heart of busy downtown Vancouver, the gallery is surrounded by glass walls emulating boundlessness. Currently, it holds the newest exhibit by Connie Sabo which displays this feeling of freedom as well as a contrasting sense of infinitude: information + impression.
Moving through the immersive pieces your senses are heightened as you feel your freedom while also recognizing the impact of containment on otherwise free-rolling objects. The lighting, purposeful, seemingly changing with the day, activates shadows that illuminate the experience, while stories are told through colourful round objects, whether they’re consumed by transparent textile, laying alone, or lightly held.
Netting, hand-woven and made from twisted newspapers is almost meta. A different news story, a kind of trap but also a path that both holds us up, keeps us stuck, and even frees us? This exhibit is both a conversation piece of our times as well as an enveloping experience that gets you thinking about where we’re situated both physically in our bodies and mentally as we free-roll our way through the present.
Whether you take a break from the office to visit or make it a dedicated trip, you don’t want to miss this truly captivating exhibit – on now until February 4.
