New Media Gallery Brings New Perspectives to an Old Master

Marking 10 years of supplying New Westminster with genre-defying international art, The New Media Gallery’s current exhibition, Master, similarly challenges its viewers to describe what they’ve seen. It’s a call to dialogue that the gallery does incredibly well; less about viewing content and more about finding context.

To that end, Master shows different perspectives on how the art of Cinema can be appropriated. Much like artists who use collage or audio samples, the six featured creatives retool existing video to create something new while retaining echoes of the original footage.

Using Alfred Hitchcock’s cinema as a template, each piece shows how the work of the “master manipulator” can still summon emotions, especially when shone through an artistic prism.

Here, that mastery of tone and suspense has been manipulated to create imaginative reflections on various topics. An exploration of human potential through robotics, a look at how AI can decipher our emotions, or a metaphor connecting mortality and the use of screens, Master encourages new interpretations and new ways to interpret.

See it soon before it closes on Dec 1, 2024
