Event Details

Joe David: Ka-ka-win-chealth, A Life’s Journey presents the profound and transformative work of extraordinary Nuu-chah-nulth artist, Joe David. Ka-ka-win-chealth, meaning “Supernatural White Wolf Transforming into Killer Whale,” was the name bestowed upon Joe by his father when it became apparent that Joe’s path in life was to become an artist.

According to Nuu-chah-nulth oral history, the first Killer Whale was once a supernatural White Wolf that entered the sea and transformed into the first Killer Whale, becoming a guardian of the ocean. The name Ka-ka-win-chealth symbolizes Joe David’s journey as an artist and his connection to his cultural heritage. Through his art, Joe David explores the narratives of his people, offering a powerful exploration of identity, spirituality, and artistic mastery.

Join us on Saturday, September 28th, for the opening of Joe David: Ka-ka-win-chealth, A Life’s Journey. Boundlessly creative, Joe David is a trailblazer in contemporary Indigenous art on the Northwest Coast, whose work is a powerful homage to the deep-rooted cultural legacy and sacred practices of the Nuu-chah-nulth people.

* More artworks will be added to the exhibition prior to the opening. Please watch our website for details.
