Starry Nights: Glow-in-the-Dark Creations by Dave Petko

By Jaclyn Hayward

We local folks can close our eyes and imagine the palette of our neighbourhood landscapes: sky and ocean blues, earthy greens and browns, citrus coloured sunsets and deep purple evening skies. Dave Petko’s Starry Nights at the Maury Young Arts Centre in Whistler captures these vivid colours and more with a sharp display of glowing paintings capturing both backwoods and cityscapes alike.

There’s something so inspirational and majestic about things glowing in the dark. Contrasted images and shadows make the recognizable painted backdrops even more recognizable as the phosphorescent pigment turns things around it aglow. It’s an exhibit to really let your mind wander. Is the warm shade of orange something on fire, or a more illuminated area? Is that building an office full of late-night workers or is it an apartment full of night owl inhabitants? Darkness often signifies just that, but your next evening walk will be much more vivacious after seeing these paintings, charged with light.

Find the Maury Young Arts Centre parallel with Blackcomb Way and wander through to view this display.

Starry Nights is on until March 6
