French Ending is an exhibition and bilingual book project by Vancouver artist and writer Kyla Bourgh, created in collaboration with Buenos Aires-based publisher and designer Viviana Maidanik, with French translations by Antonio Werli.
Bringing together Bourgh’s original conté illustrations, writing, and the collaborative process behind the publication, French Ending explores what happens when language is incomplete. Drawing from Bourgh’s experience of living in a country where she had only a partial command of the local language, the project considers estrangement, identity, misunderstanding, and the meaningful connections that can form despite the limits of words.
The title refers to a narrative convention that leaves a story unresolved, inviting the audience to complete it through their own experience and interpretation. In French Ending, that openness extends across writing, illustration, translation, and collaboration.
