Let’s be honest, finding inspiration in the modern era can be a daunting task. How do you let your mind climb to new creative plateaus as all the great artists of the past have done, when constant shiny distractions are loosening your footholds?

Da Vinci was a reasonably talented guy, to be sure, but he never had to deal with meandering email threads sent at 4:59 PM right before it was time to fetch the water, or drop by a public flogging. It’s these moments out wandering where we find true inspiration. No responsibilities, just your mind open, taking in each sensory experience as it comes. Being on the West Coast means these unexpected moments of (un)focus are incredibly easy to locate. Just open your door, put your phone on silent, and explore our world-famous green spaces. That’s what Leo would do.

Waterfront Park | Vancouver’s North Shore

Mountains on one side, ocean on the other, there’s a certain elemental feeling to sitting in Waterfront Park at the intersection of it all. Watching the drifting barges and ships come in and out of the harbour, you won’t be able to keep your mind from doing the same. And within walking distance of Quay Market & Food Hall, you will have easily earned a treat once you’ve gotten some solid musing done.

Queen Elizabeth Park | Vancouver

A lush city park, filled with manicured pathways, striking rock formations and other curious wanderers, this is a wonderful setting to find a bench and embark on a bit of quiet contemplation. Put worries out of your mind as you spot squirrels going about their day and the occasional wedding party doing their photoshoots in the shade of cascading willow trees.

A directionless dash across the massive grassy area will get you out of your head and back into recess mode. Then you can find a picturesque spot to cool down and admire the local wildlife playing in the nearby marshlands.

Holland Park | Surrey

10 hectares (25 acres) of greenery, walkways, and things to do! That’s what this massive urban park has in store for your next creative sabbatical. Get your mind off your process for a bit with a stroll through the flower beds, or take in a game of pickup basketball. If portraiture is your preferred painting style, you’ll find excellent opportunities to people watch and let the world go by.
