Wall for Women: The Story Behind Vancouver’s Newest Mural

If you’ve been walking downtown or gone through the Burrard Street Skytrain station, chances are you’ve passed by one of the city’s newest murals. The Wall for Women adorns the side of the Hyatt hotel and is a gorgeous addition to what was once an inconspicuous wall. Painted by artist Ola Volo, and standing three stories tall, the mural is a tribute to women who have suffered from domestic abuse.

It’s an important statement of strength and solidarity as domestic violence against Canadian women has gone up 20-30% since the pandemic began. Not only is it a stunning addition to the Vancouver skyline, but through five hidden QR codes placed throughout the mural, passersby can further proactively engage with the cause. By scanning each code, phones will be prompted with more info about the violence facing Canadian women everyday, and how a donation to the YWCA can support them.

As Ola tells the YWCA newsletter, the project is about emboldening the natural strength that these women show.

“I wanted the woman in this artwork to claim her confidence and her power back by taking up space,”  “She isn’t small or fading into the background. She’s front and centre, and commands the attention she deserves – even in the busy streets of downtown Vancouver.”
