See Vancouver in a New Light with Winter Arts Fest

The 2024 Winter Arts Festival has arrived with more reasons to venture out and explore the city’s creative side!

Kicking off in Vancouver on February 22 – 27, the Winter Arts Fest brings multimedia artists together to blanket the skyline with vibrant colour and light. Every event and installation brings a new opportunity to see the city you know from a different perspective. Wandering through the sprawling public installments, you’ll come across projection mapping, sculpture, augmented reality (AR), and live performances.

At Winter Arts Fest Dialogue: Lighting the Way, art-goers can participate in a discussion about cutting-edge Indigenous-led design and technology, hearing from contributing artists who merge art with futurism. Then be sure to take in the seven large public lighting installations across the city with Blanketing The City: Lighting The Way. Designed by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm weaver and designer, Debra Sparrow, each installation reprograms the lighting of large downtown buildings with Coast Salish patterns. The program acts as a reinstating of Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh culture to the face of the city. Attendees can even manipulate the patterns of each building via the installation,Thread Runner, which uses AR to interact with Sparrow’s pieces.

It’s only the beginning of what else you can expect from the welcome return of this winter tradition. And with the milder weather lately, there’s even more reason to get out and bask in the city’s new light.
