With its sole West Coast stop, Rajni Perera’s touring exhibition, Futures, arrives at the Surrey Art Gallery with imaginative windows into humanity’s next evolutionary steps. Drawing on the artistic traditions of Sri Lanka, her childhood home, Perera presents nearly 30 works that span mediums such as Indian miniature painting, medieval armour, and South Asian textiles.
With each piece, the multi-faceted artist shows the tumultuous emotions and various perspectives of facing the increasingly chaotic, often frightening world that we live in. Whether societal or environmental, potential shifts are characterized by future goddesses and inventive armours that prevail over dystopic realms. While it may sound like there’s an overarching tone of despair, Perera finds strength and resilience in each of her mediums. A unique and inventive collection, the incredible variety of the show shows underlines the experience of trying to gather thoughts about the future and following each imagined outcome.
If you’re having trouble articulating your thoughts about where the future might lead, Futures at the Surrey Art Gallery might be a good place to start unpacking.
Futures runs from January 25 – March 16, 2025
