Welcome to the celebration!
Surrey Art Gallery invites you to follow the path of one of our brightest community groups, the South Asian Arts Society (SAAS). Marking the two-decade anniversary since SAAS first started, the Gallery is highlighting each vibrant step of the way with the exhibition 20 Years of South Asian Arts: A Photographic Journey.
Showcasing snapshots from events, performances, and community gatherings over the years, you’ll learn all about how this passionate group has contributed to the rich fabric of one of Canada’s most diverse cities. Each photograph tells the story of a community excited to share cultural traditions, while also exploring new forms of expression.
The joyful energy of Bhangra dancing, the heartwrenching soul of Qawwali singing, and even the playful humour of sketch comedy—the exhibition is a trove of wonderful moments from a colourful local history.
While 20 years might not seem like a long time on paper, the show tells the story of how SAAS has preserved South Asian tradition that goes back hundreds of years.
20 Years of South Asian Art also commemorates the 10-year anniversary of the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts. Started by SAAS in 2016, the festival has become one of Surrey’s most popular cultural gatherings.
A traditional Indian festival marking the spiritual arrival of monsoon season (mid-August), the annual event is easily translated to life in the Lower Mainland with its heavy yearly rainfall. Providing a platform for South Asian artists of all levels, the fest offers an opportunity to experiment with different performance styles and collaborate with other creative professionals.
The exhibition runs until November 2, so it’s a great opportunity to brighten your day through the darker months of autumn. The energy in each frame is palpable, so it might even inspire you to get moving or take a Bhangra class!
