Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis – July 12 – September 29
The Polygon Gallery, Vancouver’s North Shore
What does it mean to be an icon and who, or what, becomes iconic? Icons carry authority, in their highly symbolic and instant recognisability. The new, landmark series Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis, by acclaimed photographer Martine Gutierrez, refuses ready understandings of identity, gender, and culture. Across seventeen self-portraits, Gutierrez embodies a pantheon of legendary figures – all female or feminized – from across the world’s legends, histories, and myths.
Black & White – July 13 – August 10
Equinox Gallery, Vancouver
Black and White is an exhibition celebrating Fred Herzog’s interest and affection for the city of Vancouver. Comprised of rarely seen black and white archival pigment prints, this exhibition is a rich and extended portrait of a city.
MULCHMULCHMULCH – July 20 – August 31
Deer Lake Gallery, Burnaby
The new exhibit ‘MULCH’ is an arts collective composed of friends and collaborators that seek to explore art through collaborative and land based practices, allowing for fragmented ideas to be a part of a continuous cycle of decay and rebirth.
Stepping into the Circle: Aaron Nelson-Moody / Tawx’sin Yexwulla – July 30 – October 5
West Vancouver Art Museum, Vancouver’s North Shore
With a career spanning 30 years, Aaron Nelson-Moody’s work creates connections within his audience and offers opportunities for shared learning. His current exhibition at West Vancouver Art Museum, Stepping into the Circle, uses carving, metalsmithing, and design to show the different ways art can teach, process and protest.
Watercolour Wreaths – August 1
Sage & Solace Farm, Langley
Learn how to paint a beautiful floral wreath in a loose watercolour style. You will learn about watercolour materials, experiment with basic painting techniques, and get tips on how to create a simple, colourful watercolour wreath.
Art on the Lake – August 15 -16
Alta Lake, Whistler
Experience Alta Lake like never before, as Arts Whistler transforms the south end of the lake into a floating oasis. This vibrant community celebration features an incredible lineup of local music, a floating art gallery with works from over 30 Sea to Sky artists, art classes, dance, and more!
