There’s just something so nostalgic about theatre in the summertime. Maybe because the days are a little brighter, and the West Coast air is even more refreshing. Maybe it means our hearts are a little bit more open! For us, summer invites a bit of a more leisurely pace that live theatre fits perfectly into. There’s less stress to arrive on opening night, there’s a casual buzz in the audience before the curtain draws, and intermission, by god intermission! It’s a thoughtfully curated occasion full of laughter, tears, and all manner of emotion that puts you smack in the middle of a moment. This isn’t content, these are experiences, and if summer is good for anything, it’s for savouring exactly that. You can’t pause and come back later, you’re as much part of the show as the people on stage, so grab hold of the reins this season and answer your cue to be a little more spontaneous with these limited-time performances.
Vancouver
Bard on the Beach
From June 9 to September 19, 2026
One of Vancouver’s favourite summer traditions is back with more Shakespeare by the waterfront! This year, you can expect uproarious LOLs with a suburban soccer mom interpretation of the comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Then, for something a bit more ghostly, you can lean into the darkness of Macbeth, the tragic and timeless tale of a man who would be king. Following the success of previous years’ shows with an all-goblin cast, the crooked little creatures have returned for another staging in Goblin: Oedipus, a quirky and less-than-serious take on the Greek tragedy. Finally, Antigone offers a bold new adaptation of another Sophocles tale about a devastating chain reaction of events that follows after a woman buries her brother.

Theatre Under the Stars
From July 3 to August 22, 2026
You’ll always find a bit of magic in Stanley Park on a midsummer’s eve! If you’re seeking a bit of toe-tapping energy to close out your days with, then these lively moonlit performances are just the ticket. Sister Act follows the Broadway adaptation of the classic 90s movie about how an on-the-run lounge singer transforms a convent of nuns into a soulful singing group. Then, this season’s second show is none other than Disney’s The Little Mermaid! Take a trip under the sea with the musical about a mermaid who falls deeply in love with a guy she literally saw once. Not that we’re judging, really!

Surrey
Ragas Reimagined
July 17, 2026
An evening of sumptuous harmonies, this Indian Summer Festival show brings together vocalists and musicians to create an astounding wall of layered melodies. Featuring two separate ensembles, the program kicks off with an intimate, unplugged journey through iconic Bollywood-led South Asian songs, courtesy of Raga Echoes. Then, in the second half, things pivot to the bold, genre-defying world of Raagaverse, the Juno-nominated, critically acclaimed Indo-jazz ensemble that creates soundscapes through improvisation and evocative storytelling.

Whistler
Teardrops on My *****, Maury Young Arts Centre
July 22, 2026
We only censored it because this is a family-friendly blog! Click through to see the full title (not clickbait). Australia’s Queen of Sass, Vanessa Larry Mitchell, brings this uproarious (and X-rated) tale of modern parenting, dating, and just all-around adulting to the Whistler art scene. This 19+ show is exactly the evening out you might be looking for if you’re ready for a bit of humour that the family blogs tremble at trying to squeeze into an accessible blurb.
