Event Details

Manabu Ikeda seeks inspiration from his surroundings to bring attention and awe to viewers, as a way of sending warnings about the painful reality of environmental disasters. Central to his practice are metaphors of human grief and undeniable aspects of life that are often beyond society’s control, including the fundamental forces of Mother Nature. Ikeda’s drawings also reveal human resilience and the ability to rise above devastating situations when it appears impossible.

The artist’s emotional engagement with the impact of natural and human-caused disasters eventually led him to produce Rebirth, his most significant work to date. In this large-scale drawing, Ikeda depicts a collision of humankind, nature, and an environmental disaster, while emphasizing an ensuing regeneration. The artist’s sensitive observation of microscopic worlds in the wake of Japan’s natural disasters addresses inevitable catastrophes, as Ikeda blurs the boundaries between reality and his vision of hope for the future.

Manabu Ikeda has exhibited his work widely, including Japan, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Russia, and the United States. Curated by Kiriko Watanabe, the AAM’s Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator, Flowers from the Wreckage is Ikeda’s first major solo exhibition in North America featuring over fifty works from national and international public, private and corporate collections.

As a special feature, Manabu Ikeda will be on site over the course of this exhibition and set up his studio in the AAM’s upper gallery to draw his new work.

“Walking to Know the Land” features photographic works by Khim Mata Hipol and woven photographs by Karl Mata Hipol. The exhibition takes inspiration from Ernesto Pujol’s “Walking Art Practice.” Pujol defines Walking Practice in many different terms, “Walking as flowing stillness, short walks, timeless walks, walking as decolonization, walking as a socially engaged practice.” With the same essence, ‘Walking’ has been essential for the Hipol brothers to familiarize themselves and continuously learn about their new homeland. In 2015, the two artists, their older brother and their father, immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, while their mother first crossed over from Hong Kong in 2010.

The exhibition explores the personal effects of the artists’ immigration, their current social context in so-called Canada as Filipino immigrants, how the two artists investigate decoloniality within their works, and how they comprehend their positionality in the Canadian landscape. Another meaningful gesture that this exhibition tries to address is acknowledging that the place where this project was conceptualized and the presented artists likewise are uninvited guests on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Initially Filipino nationals, the artists are aware of the heavy history of colonization here in Canada. Khim Mata Hipol photographs himself ‘as one with nature’ at various North Vancouver trails. He creates images that speak to the land and as a gesture of appreciation and acknowledgment to the new territory he resides. Conversely, Karl Mata Hipol virtually embarks on a journey historically and retraces photographs from the archival collection of UNESCO and National Geography, to name a few. Here, Hipol deconstructs and reconstructs images by interweaving Filipino patterns to offer protection and a sense of interconnection.

As a result, the photos the two artists create reflect a fresh and innovative perspective on Landscape and Nature photography. Simultaneously, the images they create encourage viewers to take their own Walk. Where will you walk? How far will your journey take you? What will you leave behind at your destination? What will you carry home from your Walk?

“Reflecting on Home” seeks to honour the history of the land upon which the Ferry Building Gallery stands – the ancestral and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Nation) who have safeguarded these lands since time immemorial. All participating artists will delve into their individual interpretations of home.

This exhibition has been in development since 2019. Its initial concept emerged from consultations with Melanie Rivers/Tiyaltiwet and Janey Chang. Due to the pandemic and ongoing renovation of the Ferry Building Gallery, the exhibition remained pending for far too long. Our heartfelt gratitude extends to Jonas Jones, whom we received additional input and guidance from, as well as to all who have played a part in bringing this exhibition to fruition.

Meet the photographers of Vancouver Street Photography Collective

Walking the streets today is a purposeful, yet distracted act. Whether we are hurried or slow, our focus is partially stolen by our electronic devices. We move unaware of other individuals and happenings, preferring to shield ourselves from further demands on our attention.

The gaze of the street photographer disrupts this dynamic. In street photography, gazing is the act of looking at something steadily, with curiosity and interest. The gaze enables us to notice that which is fleeting. We take the time to weave the details into our understanding of the larger whole.

As street photographers, we can wander and explore without any particular purpose, aside from capturing our impressions. The French photographer Edouard Boubat said, “All you have to do is open your eyes and release the shutter from time to time.”
As a street photography collective, we share this common interest but express it in a variety of ways. Each image in this exhibit represents a personal interpretation of what caught the photographer’s gaze.
