Where Light Lingers brings together paintings by local artists Elspeth Hart and Sharon Quirke, both of whom use painting to explore fleeting and ephemeral natural phenomena. Hart’s paintings examine the interplay of light and water, where refraction and reflection cause light to bend, scatter, and shift in ways that can challenge the eye to fully perceive. Quirke turns her attention to the aurora, capturing its radiant and ever-changing patterns as curtains, rays, spirals, and flickers of colour that move across the night sky. Through paint, both artists translate these transient moments into lasting images. Their works slow down experiences that might otherwise pass unnoticed, inviting us to pause and consider the movement, colour, and light of the natural world.
Elspeth Hart is a West Coast Canadian artist living and working in North Vancouver. She studied Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria prior to graduating from the Graphic Design Program at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. She worked as a Graphic Designer and began freelancing after starting her family. Her Art Education continued with painting classes at ECUAD and workshops with local and international Artists.
